Survival Rescue

How would you do if placed in a sudden “survival situation”? How would you establish your priorities? Would you decide to hike for rescue or stay put? Research shows that the first 72 hours after a situation occurs are the most important for your safety and survival. To help increase your chances of surviving these 72 hours, BOSS has created the 72 Hour Survival Rescue course.

About the Course

The 72 Hour Survival Rescue course is designed to simulate a true survival scenario. Held in a remote location in the desert or mountains near Boulder, Utah, the course is built around a realistic survival situation in which something “unexpected” has happened to your group.  You and your coursemates must then prioritize your needs and determine how to take care of each priority. Your decisions and actions will likely affect your chances of survival. Challenges faced may include finding food and water, creating ways to stay warm, and signalling for rescue. Instruction is based on an experiential learning model that gives the student a chance to attempt and explore all options before the instructors debrief and explain what other decisions or actions may have been more helpful. Survival skills will therefore be taught within the context of each group’s actions and needs. The skills taught on this course will stay true to the primitive skills BOSS has always taught, however, a few modern options for survival will also be presented if they have a contextual basis in the survival scenario created. The Survival Rescue course tests your mental and physical abilities to take care of yourself and your group when the chips are down.

About BOSS

Since 1968, BOSS Courses have set the standard for low-technology camping and desert hiking techniques, where instruction is conducted with minimal intrusion of modern technology in environments that allow course content to be experienced first-hand. Our commitment to quality and to our core philosophies has earned BOSS its reputation as the survival school to go to when you want to learn from the best in the industry.

The Course Location

The 72-Hour Survival Rescue Course is held in the mountains and deserts around Boulder, Utah. The specific location will be revealed when the course begins.

Learning by Doing

At BOSS, we strongly believe in learning by doing. While at times, instruction will be done in lecture format, it will be done in the field where students can see what they are learning and can practice their skills in a natural environment. BOSS Course enrollment is designed to provide each course with a student-teacher ratio conducive to hands-on instruction. Our courses typically have 9-12 students and 3 staff. This ensures that our staff are available to students to help guide them through the lessons as needed or sought.

The key to a successful course is a student’s maturity and his or her interest in learning in a skills-intensive environment. However, because the Survival Rescue course likely contains a period of time without significant food, you must be at least 18 to participate in the Survival Rescue course.

Food and Diet

There will be no established menu of foods for this course. Students will have to make use of the resources they “discover” as part of the scenario presented.
