Saturday Pre-Course
Flying & Shuttle
Plan on getting to Salt Lake City on the Saturday before your course and staying Saturday night. BOSS provides Shuttle service to and from Holiday Inn & Suites Salt Lake City Airport West. There’s more than one Holiday Inn in Salt Lake – make sure you plan on staying/meeting at the correct one. It’s not necessary to stay at the Holiday Inn, but it will make your morning on Sunday easier.
Driving
If you’re driving to BOSS, plan on staying in or close to Boulder, UT Saturday night. There are lodging options in town as well as plenty of opportunities to camp near or a relatively short drive from Boulder. Don’t plan on driving a long distance the morning of your course.
Sunday Course Start
Flying & Shuttle
Plan on meeting the BOSS shuttle driver at 6:15 am in the Holiday Inn & Suites Salt Lake City Airport West hotel lobby. If staying there, you’ll be able to get their complimentary breakfast starting at 6:00 am. The BOSS shuttle will load and leave promptly at 6:15 am and will arrive at BOSS by noon.
Driving
The BOSS property opens for students to arrive at 10:30 am for courses to start at noon. Plan to arrive at BOSS between 10:30 am and 11:30 am.
Boulder Town has a local coffee shop and a museum that you can visit on Sunday morning before your course begins.
Saturday Post-Course
Flying & Shuttle
Courses are scheduled to end on Saturday morning by 11:00 am*, which is when the shuttle back to the Salt Lake City Holiday Inn & Suites SLC Airport West leaves. The shuttle should arrive at the Holiday Inn at about 5:00 pm. If you’re flying home, we recommend staying Saturday night in Salt Lake City and flying out the following day.
Driving
Courses are scheduled to end all courses on Saturday morning by 11:00 am*, which is a good time to plan your departure or getting picked up. You’ll be tired at the end of your course so we don’t recommend driving yourself a long distance on Saturday. If driving yourself, we recommend you stay in Boulder, UT or nearby.
* We cannot guarantee that courses will end by 11:00 am on the last day, nor can we ensure that you will make it to the airport for a same-day flight.
Training for BOSS
A lot of our students want to know what they should do pre-course to prepare. If you’re in relatively good shape, training for your course isn’t strictly necessary. If you do want to train, consider that you’ll be walking with a pack at altitude and in heat. Our operating area isn’t flat so your training shouldn’t be either. If you run or bike, train on hills. If you train in a gym, use the stair machine in a gym instead of only a treadmill. Also – be careful when you train to avoid injuries. The last thing you want to do is to have your preparations sideline you for your course. We recommend stoping intensive training two weeks before our course. For more information, you can download our Training FAQ with tips from Alumni.
We strongly recommend against trying to acclimatize to any potential for water stress. Trying to get your body used to being in a dehydrated state or over-hydrating before the course can lead to extremely dire situations both out of and in the field.
Travel Insurance
BOSS strongly recommends getting travel insurance for your course. There are many things out of your control that could cause you to miss your course (sickness, travel issues, family emergencies, etc.), and BOSS cannot not make exceptions for cancellations made due to personal and medical emergencies. Travel insurance will help ensure you don’t wind up paying for a course you can’t take. Divers Alert Network (DAN) or World Nomads are both good options.
