Training Courses

Since 1968, BOSS has operated in one of the most beautiful and remote parts of the USA: the area surrounding the small town of Boulder, Utah. It is here where we begin and end all courses, using the surrounding public lands as our classroom.

When you're known for being "the toughest survival school in the country," people sometimes wonder what that means. Actually, people usually read that and then go on to something else, something that doesn't sound as intimidating. After all, this is your vacation time, right?

BOSS is considered by many to be the premier school for wilderness survival skills. Much of our success comes from our course curriculae and our staff development program. Over the years, we've developed core philosophies for what we teach, how we teach it, when we teach it, and why.

The Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is a required medical training certification for most wilderness guides and outfitters. This WFR course, hosted by BOSS in Boulder, Utah, is taught by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS and covers all aspects of WMI's 80-hour certification course. Held in even years (2010, 2012, etc).

In the Spring of even years (2010, 2012...), BOSS hosts a 3-Day WFR Recertification Class taught by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS. If you're an outdoor guide, chances are you need to keep your certification current. This course will renew an expiring WFR certification from WMI, WMA, and SOLO.
