Basic Course Format

Although each program is unique, mornings are typically spent as a group, traveling together on beautiful wilderness day hikes learning traditional survival skills such as fire-by-friction, orienteering and shelter construction from Senior BOSS field instructors. In the afternoon, BOSS Corporate Facilitators (if desired) translate the knowledge gained in the morning activities into practical and relevant business applications that address the specific, pre-determined needs of your organization. This two-part approach maintains a balance between the active physical participation of wilderness skills and the active mental participation of leadership development.

How We Assess Your Needs

We understand that every organization and every leader faces different challenges and different needs at key times in their business. A BOSS Professional Development Program can help you face those challenges and work through them. We strongly believe that we can help create an incredible program which produces a better corporate culture for almost any organization, therefore it's always best if we listen to you first and hear what you're thinking. This way, your program is unique in addressing your company's specific objectives and determining how to implement an action plan.

Course Location & Weather

BOSS offers Professional Development courses in several established locations both nationally and internationally. Established basecamps are located in Central Colorado, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Western Mexico, and Northwestern Canada. Custom programs, however, can be offered anywhere as long as we have access to a suitable wilderness setting and the time necessary to address logistics & safety concerns. For more detailed information on location options, please visit www.bosscorporate.com or call us.

Weather is, understandably, linked to course location. We prefer to operate in warmer climates, with daytime temperatures between 70- 95F and evening temperatures between 40-60F. We will, therefore, determine a suitable location once we know what time of the year you would like to be in the field with us. For overnight trips, an equipment list will be provided to each participant which is consistent with the expected weather patterns at the course site and the nature of the course curriculum. Again, we can tell you more about what will be needed once we are planning the course with you.

Travel & Lodging

Unless we have made special arrangements for your group, travel reservations and costs associated with travel are not included as part of your BOSS Professional Development course. If you would like us to assist with the travel plans (helpful with international travel), we are happy to work with you.

Lodging is also handled by you or your company, unless you have selected the Premier plan for a Custom Field Course. For Premier packages, BOSS staff will make all ground travel, lodging, and meal arrangements.

For single-day events, we usually have meals catered by Whole Foods and/or Einstein Bagels (depending on which meals you request). We can arrange for individually-packaged meals or group-dining meals -- this is something we can discuss further along in the course preparation discussions.

Health & Fitness

Our Professional Development courses are designed to be challenging, but we recognize that the typical team of executives may not be interested in an extreme wilderness trip. For some, anything outside is extreme. Although we are able to reduce the severity of some routes and decrease the pace for hikes, it is important for participants to understand that the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of our courses are what make BOSS unique. The actual challenges can be reduced as long as the relative challenges still push people to explore outside of their comfort zones -- this is where true learning and living takes place.

Please take some time to evaluate the needs of your company and consider the powerful effect a course like this can have on them. We know that our courses are effective, and we know that people can grow more from one BOSS course than many, many other less intense adventures. But that does not mean this trip is suited for everyone. If you have questions, give us a call. We can discuss your needs and ours in more detail, and guide you into making the right decision.

Because we are concerned about each person's safety and health on a course, each participant is required to obtain a medical doctor's approval before being confirmed for a trip (multi-day trips only). This is explained in the course paperwork provided to you upon registration.

Equipment & Clothing

At BOSS, the gear we use on the trail is not as important as the techniques and skills we teach for wilderness living. On some of our courses, we do not even bring camping gear. However, we recognize that most executives are not ready for this type of intense immersion into the physical realities of wilderness survival.

For multi-day trips, almost all the gear and clothing you will need for your time with us is included in the price of your course and can be picked up during course orientation. If you prefer, we can also ship the items to you in advance so that you can become familiar with them before your course.

Items not provided (shoes, underwear, etc.) will be listed on the Equipment List sheets sent to you once we have set a course location and dates. Specific questions about gear are best left until after Registration and Assessment for your course.

Course Pricing

Custom Course Pricing -

Our goal at BOSS is to deliver a quality product at a price appropriate to its value to your company, and we hope to create a relationship that is sustainable. Therefore, we will be sure to work with you on all financial matters. Because each Professional Development course is different, we will discuss pricing with you once we know more about your group and the type of experience you are seeking. The cost of a Professional Development course will vary depending on the following four factors:

  1. Location of the course
  2. Length of the course
  3. Size of your party
  4. Course content/curriculum

There may also be certain expenses above and beyond the standard course, since we give you complete control over many aspects of the trip. For example, you may choose to wrap-up the course at a Health & Fitness Spa, or bring spouses in for the final celebration. Rest assured, however, that you will be fully informed of all additional expenses before they are incurred.

Prices are calculated using a per-person, per-day rate that includes the pre-course assessment, all instruction, course materials, field support, certain equipment, permits, food, insurance, and the post-course review. More information on pricing will be provided during our initial discussion and assessment with you.

Reserving / Registering for a Course

If you are interested in taking the next step toward a BOSS Professional Development course, please contact Josh Bernstein via e-mail or call Jenny Stein in our Colorado office at 303.444.9779.

Once we have your information, we will speak with you to discuss your needs and, if applicable, send you a more detailed Company Assessment form. Once we have received your Assessment Form, one of our lead trainers will determine the content and cost of your course. At this point, we will ask for a 20% deposit and arrange a meeting with you, typically at your company's headquarters. The cost for this meeting is included in your full tuition, but travel and lodging expenses are additional and will be billed to your company. All reservation policies are outlined in the Company Assessment literature.

Pending the success of this meeting, dates and staffing will be confirmed and full payment for the program will be due 45 days prior to the program start date.

Complete information about course equipment, transportation, lodging, payment policies, etc. will be sent to you at appropriate stages of the registration process. For now, please call us for more information about our program and how it can benefit your company or executive team.
